Nike Golf Fans Blog Features “Sunrise on the Highlands”

This week the 93rd PGA Championship is being held at the Atlanta Athletic Club, in Johns Creek, Georgia. I’ve had the opportunity to visit the private club a few times including the opportunity to Sunrise On The Highlandsphotograph the golf course early in the morning. Having posted a few pictures of the golf course on Flickr, I received a request this week from a fellow blogger to use “Sunrise on the Highlands” as the backdrop for the NGNATION.com blog during this championship week. NGNATION is a blog for the fans of Nike Golf. Take a minute and check out the NGNATION website.

You can view other images from the Atlanta Athletic Club on my Flickr site as well. My panorama shot of the 18th Hole and Lake just out from the clubhouse is also available on this website, 2nd row, last image.

Downtown Minneapolis and I-35W Bridge

Downtown Minneapolis and I-35W BridgeI’m heading up to Minneapolis Tuesday on a quick trip for work (the job that pays the bills).  In 2009 when I visited Minneapolis in September I stayed for seven days resulting in a little more time to capture photographs between the busy work schedule. During that extended stay, I was able to capture this amazing shot of Downtown Minneapolis and I-35W Bridge.

Late afternoon on the weekend I ventured downtown with the hopes to find an interesting view of the skyline against the setting sun. I meandered around the University of Minnesota campus (just north of downtown) and happened on an old railroad bridge over the Mississippi River. The bridge was converted to a walk/run/bike bridge and named the Dinkytown Trail Bridge and connects the campus to downtown.

Setting Up the Shot

I set up my camera and tripod and waited for the sun to set and for the city lights to come on. (Tip: Monday-Friday are better days for building lights – people are actually working!) I continued taking pictures for about 45 minutes. One of the resulting images is this beauty of the downtown Minneapolis skyline with the new I-35W bridge lit in teal blue. You may recall that I-35W is the bridge that fell into the river back in 2007. If you look closely you’ll see that in the foreground is the 10th Avenue Bridge, silhouetted in black, and the teal I-35W bridge shows through its side rails.

The Result

Although the skyline and bridge are a focal point, its the beautiful reflections in the river that really make this photo pop. Its one of my personal favorites and I have been successful in selling it commercially and in prints. This photo is also in my top ten, most-viewed photos on Flickr.

The Power of Flickr

Sunrise Spectators, Tybee Island, GA

Sunrise Spectators

Thursday was just another day in the MR MARK photography world and all of a sudden an email arrives from the Photo Department of TravelandLeisure.com (a subsidiary of American Express). They requested the use of “Sunrise Spectators” from my recent Savannah, GA vacation.

Where did they find my photo? Through my Flickr account.

How significant is that? Well, in my opinion, it wasn’t by accident.

What do you mean? When I post photos on Flickr, I do it to share photos with my friends, family and anyone else in the world. How I do it is another story. I learned pretty early that with a little care, you can make your photos rise to the top of similar subject photos. Appropriately naming your photo, providing the location and listing relevant tags (i.e. keywords) will give your photos a better opportunity to be “found” on Flickr.

What’s the benefit of having a photo ‘found’ on Flickr? Flickr, as the largest photo sharing website, is a place that many companies search for great photos. This is not the first time a company or individual has found a photo of mine and requested permission to use it. Sometimes its an individual blogger, other times it has been magazines and several times it has been businesses. Each of them have contacted me for permission or purchased rights to use an image on their website or in their printed materials.

TravelandLeisure.com will provide credit and a link back to this website. And for that, any budding photographer is thrilled! I’ll let you know when its on their website.
