Its a fresh start to my new and improved website and blog. I started this blog (of sorts) back in June 2009 with a StudioPress theme on a WordPress blog. I posted updates on somewhat of a regular basis, but my last post was in February 2010. Although the StudioPress Black Canvas theme served me for a time, I began searching for a solution that was geared more to a photographers’ needs.
I first looked at Adobe Lightroom plugins such as FotoPlayer and The Turning Gate. Although they each provide beautiful galleries and the ability to establish an entire website, neither of them came across robust enough to handle social media, analytics, etc. without a course (or two) in HTML/CSS.
Next it was on to SmugMug and Zenfolio. Both photo sharing sites offer great galleries and easy print purchase options but I felt that the out-of-the-box solutions were just not slick enough for my needs.
At this point I determined WordPress was a must-have as I was already familiar with it and it offers the depth of thousands of plugins and it is consistently upgraded and improved. It’s like the iPhone of the blog world; more apps than any competitor.
I took a second look at StudioPress themes, this time focusing on their new Genesis designs. Although they are slick looking, there just wasn’t a theme that offered a solid gallery solution.
So it was on to Google and a search for wordpress+photography+themes.
As I browsed through a number of themes, I came across Photocrati and began to dive deeper. Wow! Galleries and a robust theme option module right inside WordPress. The price was right $79, and so I made the leap.
Here I am about two weeks into my transition and my site has been overhauled with a clean, fresh look. I have activated several plugins, such as Lightbox Plus and WP-CopyRightPro, that add to the already fabulous Photocrati framework. Kudos to the Photocrati team for providing a cost-effective and easy-to-maintain solution for aspiring photographers like me!
Take a look around. Check out the ‘slideshow’ on the Home page with some of my favorite images. Browse under Portfolio to view a selection of images grouped by subject matter. Let me know what you think.
If you have your own photography-oriented website/blog, please share it with me in the comments.
